My Story

Little Kazuko Tajima didn’t know she would live through one of the days that changed human history. She didn’t know she would turn 12 years old in a bomb shelter, and she didn’t know she would have a cousin who was a kamikaze pilot. There were days before August 6, 1945, and there were days after, but the day itself marked a turning point for humanity. This was the day the United States used its first atomic weapon, and little Kazuko was there witnessing the world change. These are the stories of a young Japanese girl on the days leading to, on, and following that historic day. Hear them here, in her own voice, and see how this event changed Japanese culture and history forever.

About
Testimonials

" ...Her vivid recollection of experiencing the blast alone in her sixth-grade classroom makes readers feel like we are right there with her... This story, from the perspective of someone external to the better-known narratives of twentieth-century history in Japan, provides a fresh take on the critical events of 1945 and the decades before and after the war."
